The author proves the relevance of the study of the fear of death as an existential fact, accompanying life and the development of the personality of each person. The novelty of the research lies in the consideration of the fear of death as a transdiagnostic category that determines the development of neurotic states. The author draws attention to the insufficient effectiveness of the correction of neurotic states, including the return of clients to psychotherapeutic help with new symptoms, which is explained by the peculiarities of the attitude towards death. Arguing this position, the author cites data from foreign studies demonstrating a correlation and causal relationship between fear of death in the development of mental disorders (anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder). The article contains information on the main methods of psychological correction of the fear of death used in foreign practice (cognitive-behavioral therapy, existential psychotherapy). In conclusion, the author comes to the conclusion that it is necessary to consider the fear of death as a transdiagnostic category within the framework of the correction of mental disorders. This approach rejects working exclusively with the symptomatology of a particular mental disorder, but takes into account existential issues that may influence its course. The author draws attention to the fact that work with the fear of death should combine the methods of cognitive-behavioral and existential psychotherapy and cannot be limited to only one direction. The prospect of the research is the development of methods for diagnostics and psychocorrection of the severity of fear of death. The article emphasizes the need for further research on the role of fear of death in the development, course and prevention of the manifestation of various neurotic states.
