High-flow oxygen therapy (HFO) delivers humidified and warm oxygen-air mixture to the airways with inspiratory oxygen fraction of 21 — 100% and flow rate up to 80 L/min. High-flow oxygen therapy is characterized by several advantages over traditional oxygen therapy. According to some recent studies, high-flow oxygenation is no less effective than traditional oxygen therapy. Moreover, this approach is more comfortable compared with non-invasive ventilation in some situations and may be used efficiently for the management of acute respiratory distress syndrome.
